FP-31 is a portable gas detector that is very sensitive and specifically detects formaldehyde (HCHO). This unit uses a photoelectric photometric method that uses a colorimetric tablet for detection. A tablet is placed into the instrument, and then a room air sample is pumped into the tablet for 15 minutes or 30 minutes. If formaldehyde is present, it causes the surface of the chemically impregnated tablet to darken or stain. The size of the stain is directly correlated to the level of formaldehyde in the air. The darkness of the stain is read by an optical sensor in the FP-31, and then the instrument calculates the formaldehyde concentration.
